2020 SCUTTLEBUTT Updated Winter 2018
Definition of Scuttlebutt for those unfamiliar with the word – Naval Slang for gossip - so let’s get gossiping and make 2020 another special year for former Wrens and serving ladies
Planning for 2020 moves on apace so here is the first update on what events are in the pipeline for 2019 as well as the main events in 2020.
The 2019 Association Out of Town meeting on 18th May is being hosted by Portsmouth Branch and with their usual enthusiasm to get the party started, following the meeting, a dinner will take place in the Maritime Club that evening.
Also in 2019 we hope many of you will join us on a steam train excursion on 4July with the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead including a fish and chip lunch on the outward journey, a chance to wriggle your toes in the sea at Minehead, and a cream tea on the return trip. Sounds like fun to me so watch out for more details.
We will be launching our Centenary Year with a dinner at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton on Saturday 21st March 2020 - A drinks reception on the flight deck followed by a 3 course dinner under the wings of Concorde. Application forms for this event will be going out in the Spring 2019 edition of The Wren with priority for members so don’t delay in submitting your application as I know demand is going to be high.
Wednesday 10th June 2020 – The WRNS Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum – a service in the garden (in the NMA Chapel in the event of inclement weather) and the unveiling of our commemorative monument followed by a reception / buffet lunch in the new NMA events centre.
Friday 2nd to Monday 5th October 2020 – Our finalé event in Edinburgh, will be an action-packed weekend with a reception on the Friday evening, the Association AGM on Saturday afternoon and dinner that evening in the Royal Scots Club. Sunday morning a church service at Canongate Kirk Church and then an outing to a place of interest in the afternoon. Detailed planning is ongoing so watch this space!
Please note the correction to Edinburgh dates from our last Scuttlebutt as we’d hate you to have the wrong date in your diary.
Throughout 2020 Barbara McGregor will be organising WRENS OUT WALKING (WOW) in various parts of the country so join in and walk a little or a lot to spread the word that Wrens are celebrating our Centenary. More information to follow.
FUNDRAISING – The organisation and planning for the year cannot be achieved without funds. A Grand Raffle could win you £1,500, £1,000 or £500 not to mention lots of other prizes. Books of tickets will be available at all events over the next two years. Please help by buying and selling as many tickets as possible. A donation flyer will also be included in the Winter magazine giving you the opportunity to be a contributor to our Centenary Monument. The flyer will give details of the design of the monument which will be sited in the WRNS garden at the NMA.
Centenary sales items are selling well and make great presents, they are on sale all year round via the website shop or from our sales brochure.
Apart from our three National Events we hope branches and informal groups will organise an event in their local area. This can take the form of anything you think would appeal to our members. Portsmouth and York Branches have already expressed their interest in organising a 2020 event.
A complete diary of events will be kept in HQ and we ask that anybody organising an event to please contact the office so that it can be recorded on the 2020 planner ensuring that events don’t clash.
