The 1966'ers 50 year Celebration

The 1966 Wrens celebrate 50 years at the Royal Maritime Club Portsmouth

Enjoying a visit to Portsmouth in June last year with fellow members of the Cheltenham Branch, I met up with ‘Facebook’ wren friend Maxine Higgins (nee Parish). Lots of chat and the realisation that we had both joined up in 1966 and that this year (2016) would be the 50th Anniversary of our joining, it seemed so natural to say ‘let’s have a party !’, and so the fun of organising the event and finding as many people as we could began. We even set up our own group on Facebook.

Thirteen months later on Friday 12th August 2016, after many emails, phone calls and a couple of visits to Portsmouth (Max lives there!), forty seven 1966 wrens met at the Royal Maritime Club in Portsmouth for dinner. The girls had travelled from all over the UK, from the far north of Scotland to Newquay in Cornwall; we even had one fly in from Florida!  What a wonderful time we all had. So much laughter, so many smiles, and so many more memories made as well as re-lived. Friendships renewed and new ones made. We had ‘girls’ from all 4 divisions, but not every intake, right through the year, and a good mix of trades. We must also thank Terry Inskip (nee Pegg) for putting together a dvd of all our photos and some extras and Mary Brittan (nee Hackey) for supervising the raffle for us.

We are also pleased to say that through the generosity of all there, with a raffle etc we have been able to send donations totalling £393 to AOW, WRNSBT and Wrens100.

It must have been a success as the consensus at the end of the evening was to do it all over again, so, hopefully in 2018, the 1966’ers will have another get together, and hopefully even more will be able to join us.

If anyone reading this joined in 1966 and would be interested in joining us in 2018 please do contact cheltenham@wrens.org.uk or telephone 01242 680420
