March is the traditional Rugby Six Nations Rugby month, but wait ....
.... .if you were at St Helen's Ground, Swansea on Wednesday 14th March (despite the very blustery winds and rain showers) you would have witnessed a great rugby match between the RN Women and Swansea Uni Ladies. The final result was a win for the Royal Navy Women 19-15!
Supporters for both teams wisely sat in the stand on the leeward side of the ground and were well aware of the challenges faced by the players, kicking against the prevailing wind. Showing the flag for the Navy were personnel from TS AJAX, HMS Dragon Ass. HMS Cambria RNR, TAWE Division, Association of Wrens Swansea Branch, Swansea Uni URNU, etc! Pictured sitting in the stand it was good to see AOW members Captain Ellie Ablett (CO HMS RALEIGH), Barbara McGregor (Naval Careers Service WO) who organised the event assisted by Ruth Fleming (Lt Cdr OIC TAWE Division), and Celia Saywell (PRO).
Following the match presentations were made by Brigadier Graeme 'Jock' Fraser RM MBE (Naval Regional HQ Wales & West) and Captain Ellie Ablett. Also present were the Assitant Director of RN Women's Rugby Lt Cdr Paula Bennett-Smith, and the CO of HMS CAMBRIA Cdr Steve Fry.
The Team Captain of the victorious side L/H Sam Anderson received the Ellie Norkett Memorial Trophy, the Player of the Match award was presented to PO Sarah Jenkins and a personal trophy from PO Judy Hall (HMS Vivid RNR) was given to her daughter, Swansea Uni player, Katie Hall. Vice Captain of the RN Women was Lt Helen Stevenson.
A collection for the RNRMC in recognition of their support was taken at the match.
